Leonardo da Vinci developed a range of innovative war machines that improved upon traditional medieval designs. This one is based on his drawing from the Codex Atlanticus, Leonardo’s Aerial Screw was to use the power of 4 men to push the canopy and outer ring.
The canopy/ support structure is removable, so you can experiment with your own helicopter or wing-type systems.
The Aerial Screw is one of da Vinci’s most iconic drawings, and defines an artist and inventor well ahead of his time. This working model uses a bevel gear, also from his drawings, to spin the canopy and support structure, illustrating a way Leonardo thought flight might be possible.

The word helicopter is a combination of “HELICO” (spiral) and “PTER” (one with wings).
